This fall, the group performed at two high school exhibitions—the CD Hagan Invitational at Brandon High School on Sept. 20 and the Copiah Academy Marching Festival in early October. The band also joined the Mississippi State Fair’s Great American Parade on Oct. 13, part of the nationwide America 250 celebration.

On July 4, 2026, the Choctaws will travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the semiquincentennial parade. Mississippi College will be the only school representing the Magnolia State.

Duval Salvant, MC’s band director, explained how recent institutional changes have given the band new opportunities to take its shows beyond MC’s campus. “The big thing is that we will be recruiting more,” Salvant said. “Instead of being at football games and playing halftime shows there, we are going out to the high schools and getting to play for them directly, instead of them having to come to us.”

While the director is confident in this new direction, he assured the band would still be involved on campus. Mississippi College’s homecoming weekend in late October will be a significant opportunity to perform at home. “We will still do our halftime show there like we would at a normal football game,” Salvant said. “We will be on the quad playing and we will still be participating in the parade throughout the city. We still have some normalcy.”

Lori Madison, a junior at MC and co-captain of the color guard, gave her perspective on how the band will operate differently. “I am most excited for homecoming just to see what is going to be different about it,” Madison said. “The opportunity to participate in parades is also really interesting.”

Madison also explained how the changes at MC have allowed the band to explore its own identity outside of sports-related performances. “We get to have different kinds of performances,” Madison said. “In the past, we have mostly been a way to show school spirit. Now, we are able to branch out and become a band more independently of other organizations.”

The band member shared her hopes for the year. “My main hope, with the opportunities that we’ve been granted this year, such as our various exhibition performances, is that we are able to perform well enough and at a high enough standard to be able to continue getting those opportunities in the future and to really solidify our reputation among others as a good, high-achieving band,” Madison said.

The MC student created the group after noticing there were no on-campus opportunities for creative expression through fashion. “I saw something that we didn’t have at MC, which was fashion,” Jefferson said. “[There were] no majors or minors, and I wanted something where faith can be represented through fashion.”

The group began modeling on campus with its first shoot in August. According to the models, Code Gold is more than just styling clothes. The group’s mission statement says in part, “Code Gold is more than a model squad; we represent Christ, culture, and confidence while providing a community of spirituality that can coexist within.”

Jefferson recalled that starting the fashion squad took time, effort, and strategic planning. The group’s founder transferred from Hinds Community College with a degree in fashion design. After changing schools, Jefferson wanted to bring some of his previous experience to Mississippi College. “I knew I had to wait for the right time and for God to open the door for me. I gained so many leadership skills through waiting and being a leader in different groups,” Jefferson said.

Jefferson has held several leadership positions during his time at Mississippi College. He was part of the MC Chapel team and event coordinator for the MSA during his junior year at the university. He also represented the group in the MC Student Government Association. Now, as a senior, Jefferson is the vice president of the MSA and the leader of Code Gold.

According to the group, Code Gold was created to tie faith into fashion, promote creativity in leadership, and provide a safe space for minority groups on campus. “We are a judgment-free zone,” Jefferson said.

Code Gold has 30 models this semester. Jefferson plans to use the modeling squad as a way to promote his fashion brand, the Haus of Excellence. The models will showcase Jefferson’s line in their upcoming shoots.

The group plans several events and wants to interact beyond MC. Jefferson explained his interest in collaborating with nearby fashion businesses. “I would love to work with other boutiques in the area and have my line featured in their stores,” Jefferson said. “We would also support and model their clothes as well.”

Jefferson created the modeling squad not only to give models a place to express themselves but also to create opportunities to grow in their relationship with Christ. “We are lit by heaven, not by hype,” Jefferson said. “People are often hyped by other people, we are lit by what Jesus did for us, and we show that through our modeling.”

The senior expressed his excitement for future Code Gold events. Jefferson plans to incorporate his modeling shows with photo shoots and pop-up shops, which he hopes will engage attendees. “We want to engage with the student body and staff here at MC, and we also want them to engage with us,” Jefferson said.

Jefferson urges other students to continue trying new experiences. He said that MC students are the reason new ideas come to the school. “I was driven by something that I didn’t see here,” Jefferson said. “I influence people to go against the grain; it can be different. Just keep pushing through.”

Rowlen is no stranger to RUF – his friends introduced him to the ministry at the University of Mississippi. After graduating from Ole Miss, he went on to complete his studies at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) in Jackson, Mississippi. “RUF was the first place where I was challenged on what I believed and why I believed it,” Rowlen said.

Rowlen’s RUF involvement extends beyond his college years; in 2010, he interned at MC’s RUF ministry before leaving to work in southern Mississippi in 2013. After learning about the possibility of an RUF position opening last December, Rowlen applied to work as the campus minister and was hired.

RUF’s mission is, in part, “reaching students for Christ and equipping them to serve.” Although MC is a Christian campus, Rowlen acknowledges that there are students who aren’t Christians. For students who are curious about Christianity or have questions about their faith, he recommends attending campus ministry events and local church services. “It’s very much a learn by doing type of thing,” Rowlen said. He also encourages students to ask questions, warning them not to think too highly of themselves.

Rowlen’s main goal for RUF this year is to continue the good work of his predecessor, Jeff Jordan, who served MC’s chapter for 13 years. He desires to continue fostering a good relationship with the whole college. “I can tell that the rest of MC really honors RUF,” Rowlen said.

RUF’s ministry has been important for many students on campus, including Katie Browning, a senior who has attended RUF since her freshman year. Browning is now a member of the ministry team, helping with Large Group setup and announcements.

Although the transition in leadership brought some changes to RUF, Browning is confident in the new team. “They’ve been having to learn our culture, but they have been very intentional about learning and getting involved,” she said.

RUF typically meets in its Large Group every Monday on the third floor of Alumni Hall. In addition to weekly meetings, the ministry hosts men’s and women’s Bible studies and a Wednesday lunch in the cafeteria. The group also shares updates and event information on social media. Rowlen said he looks forward to planning more events and connecting with students as he continues RUF’s ministry of faith, service and community.

According to Jake Donald, director of alumni and family engagement, the event hosted more than 1,000 people representing around 250 families from all across the state and different parts of the country.

The highlight of the weekend for many freshmen ladies was Squeal Night. The ladies who completed the recruitment process gathered on Sept. 19 to discover which social tribe they would join as potential new members (PNM).

For the gentlemen, Friday night festivities were more discreet. While the men’s clubs did not hold any open events, potential new members discovered which organization they had the chance to join. On Saturday, for the first time, clubs participated in a new member reveal hosted by The Council. On the quad, the new member classes were presented one by one as parents, friends, and active club members cheered on.

At the heart of family weekend was the tailgate. In years past, this festivity typically preceded a football game; this year, the tailgate featured live music and a cornhole tournament.

Attendees enjoyed live music by The Band Midwk in front of Nelson Hall. The band was formed on campus and is composed of current students and recent alumni. “Having the opportunity to play for the students here at MC is very special to us. With all of us being students or alumni, we love to be able to give back to the university in such an awesome way,” Eli Black, the group’s drummer, said.

For some, a highlight was the cornhole tournament. Dozens of teams participated in a bracket-style competition leading to a single team champion. Lawson Goodman and Christian Bond, representing Rotaract Men’s Club, were crowned as the eventual winners.

“It was pretty fun. Christian and I talked about it a couple of weeks ago, and knew we would give everyone a run for their money. I knew we would do pretty well, but actually going all the way was a bit of a surprise, considering some of the competition,” Goodman said. “We barely pulled through on a few games, but in the end, we came out on top, and that’s what mattered.”

While the quad saw most of the excitement, the activities of family weekend also extended downtown for the Cruzin’ Clinton Car Show. Held on the brick streets, this annual event saw more than 100 vehicles lined up on Jefferson Street and the surrounding old town area. Many MC families took the afternoon to explore the show and visit the shops and restaurants.

Timothy Miller is the newest addition to Mississippi College’s Chick-fil-A team. The 20-year-old Clinton native began work this fall, finding not just a job but a community.

For Miller, who has Down syndrome, the job offers a chance to connect with students his age, gain independence, and take steps toward his dream of one day working as a grill master.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Miller is the youngest of three siblings. His family moved to Clinton while he was still a child, where he later attended Clinton High School. After graduating in 2024, Miller participated in Project Search, a program that offers internships for young adults with disabilities. He interned at Clinton’s Goodwill and even ended up on television for his participation in the program.

After completing his internship, Miller learned of the Chick-fil-A position through his parents. “I can really understand why my parents chose Chick-fil-A: to be closer to my family and so I can still do the things that I still love to do,” Miller said.

Miller’s love for socializing, coupled with his willingness to learn, made him an excellent candidate for the position.

“I connect with people my age very well,” Miller said.

At Chick-fil-A, Miller’s tasks include putting together orders, calling out customer names, and delivering the food. During this time, he has a chance to chat with patrons, who are mainly MC students.

“I get to learn about them and what they study,” Miller said. “But, also, I want to see what their lives are like.”

Aside from connecting with students, Miller’s favorite part of the job is making and drinking milkshakes, the cookies-and-cream and chocolate flavors being his preference. He looks forward to every Thursday when his mom lets him break his diet for the day and have this “special treat.”

Another highlight of the job is the support Miller receives from the Chick-fil-A staff. “They help me a lot,” Miller said. “My boss is an advocate for me, which I like more than people that are not my advocate. I like it when people look out for me, take care of me. So, I’m really blessed to have a boss like that.”

The staff has welcomed Miller as a valued team member.

“When his parents first called saying that he wanted a job, I jumped on board with it because everyone deserves a chance,” Mashauna Wells, Miller’s manager, said. “So far, Timothy is an awesome worker. I love him, and he makes the best milkshakes ever.”

For Miller, this is just the beginning, as he has many plans for the future. Next fall, he plans to complete a college experience at MC to see if it is the right fit for him. “Not all people like me get to do that; it’s just extra special for me,” Miller said.

He also hopes to become a professional grill master. “My biggest passion is to grill, so I would like to grill hamburgers at a hamburger restaurant like Brick Street Burgers,” Miller said.

During his off time, Miller loves fishing, playing with his beloved dog, Bella, a corgi mix, and spending time with friends and family. However, Miller always looks forward to getting back to work.

“I’m really excited because I like seeing all the people having fun and eating good food that I serve,” Miller said. “But not just that. It’s also the people that I work with who make you feel welcome here.”

“We are a group of worship leaders,” Kemp said. “We take on the task of leading worship in chapel every week, but we also do nights of worship and other events. Our ensemble technically falls under the music department, but we like to think we serve the entire campus.”

Worship Collective is not simply a group of musicians and singers. The students who make up the band lead with the hope that God will be glorified through their talents. They do not aim to bring attention to themselves but hope that they will lead others’ attention to Christ.

“Being in a worship leader role, being on the platform, a lot of eyes are on you,” Alyson Jadzinski, senior member of Worship Collective, said. “But the Lord quickly humbles you, quickly reminds you, this is about making much of his name.”

For the members of the group, it has not only been an opportunity to lead, but it has also been an opportunity for growth. Many of the members have been able to learn and grow in their hearts behind leading worship.

“It taught me how to be more real when I lead worship and not be ashamed of my weakness,” Jadzinski said. “Because scripture talks about in 2 Corinthians, His grace is sufficient for us, for His power is made perfect in weakness.”

Worship Collective’s impact extends beyond weekly chapel services. The group also hosts a worship night during Welcome Week and has served at the Baptist Convention CRV Banquet and multiple DNOWs. Recently, they hosted a worship night in the Upper Commons in Alumni Hall, which showcased a more acoustic side of the band.

“We rock out a lot in Chapel,” Kemp said. “I mean, we’re playing for hundreds of people in there and we do full band worship, which has its place, but also, the stripped down acoustic worship has its place too. I’ve never been a part of a worship in the round where everyone centers themselves around a cross and sings together, so that was very special.”

Participating in the band has also allowed the members chances to grow technically in their musical abilities. They have been able to improve their talents and their ability to work with other musicians. To the musicians, Worship Collective has not simply been a pastime. It has been a way for them to invest in the campus, and, in turn, they have found that they have also been impacted by the group.

“My favorite part is that I have learned so much,” Drew Martin, sophomore member, said. “When I think back to before coming to MC and joining Worship Collective, I knew nothing compared to what I know now. Mr. Kemp pushes us in ways that I didn’t even know that I needed, just learning about a lot of the logistical things like communication between songs and communication amongst the musicians and the singers.”

Virtual auditions for the 2025-26 Worship Collective team concluded last week. Both Kemp and the past year’s members encourage students interested in singing or playing an instrument to get involved.

“Worship Collective is great,” Martin said. “If anybody wants to audition, they definitely should. It’s a great experience.”

Originally from Mumbai, India — then known as Bombay — he and his family immigrated to the United States when he was a young child, eventually settling in the south at the end of his eighth-grade year.

“Growing up a doctor’s son, I wanted to be like my dad,” Parke said. “But in ninth grade, in Florida, God revealed a different plan. I preached my first sermon at age fourteen. The rest, for me, is history.”

Surrendered to the call of ministry, Parke attended Baylor University before attending New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. There, he earned his PhD in Old Testament and Hebrew. He anticipated a life as a pastor, open to the possibility of teaching at a university if God opened the doors. To his surprise, however, he found himself teaching full time and preaching on the side. Today, he is a professor and the assistant to the chair in the department of Christian Studies at MC.

“I don’t think there’s any secret that he’s got to be the most popular professor of our department,” said Evan Lenow, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Christian Studies. “Maybe one of the most popular professors across the entire campus. And just watching how he shows care and concern for students and how they, in turn, respond, they just love him and appreciate him so much. It’s fun to watch.”

Parke has captivated students’ hearts with his constant care and presence. He is considered a mentor by many students, and he invests in students’ lives, building relationships that run deeper than teacher and student.

“He and his wife both have really ministered to me and kind of adopted me into their family, which is just a huge blessing,” Maddie Ann Story, a junior at MC, said. “I think his presence is so unwavering. Whenever you see Dr. Parke there, you know that it’s fine.”

Parke acknowledges MC as an abundant blessing in his life. He loves teaching the Bible and is thankful that he has a job that pays him to do what he would gladly do for free. His wife also taught on campus in the Department of Math and Computer Science, and both of his children graduated from MC. He loves both his students and colleagues and considers himself lucky to know them.

“I teach the best students on campus,” Parke said. “I teach the best material on campus. Not because of who I am but because it’s God’s Word.”

His willingness to serve others and passion for scripture does not go unnoticed. Both students and colleagues have been blessed by his wisdom and guidance.

“I remember when I was getting ready to graduate and go to seminary,” Lenow said. “He wanted to make sure that I knew he was proud of what I was doing and was encouraging me to go on and pursue my graduate education.”

Over his time at MC, he has been nominated twice as the Distinguished Professor from the School of Christian Studies and the Arts. The 2014 Tribesman was dedicated to him, and he also received the 2018 SGA Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award. He is also a sponsor for Shawreth Men’s Service Club and has authored two books: Reclaiming the Real Jesus and When Life Meets the Soul.

“I think he brings such a passion for what he does,” Storey said. “As an education major, I can kind of see him as a friend, obviously, but I can also respect him even more as a teacher because he cares so much about what he is teaching. He brings passion in his own special way because he’s not the loudest, he’s not the most extravagant, but I think because of that, when he says something, it holds a lot more weight.”

Recently, Parke was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gherig’s Disease. Despite the trials he has faced with his health, he remains an inspiration to his students and colleagues as he continues to fervently teach the Bible.

“Do what you can when you can as God leads,” Parke said. “We have no idea the next moment. Live this moment to the fullest, no regrets, not for yourself, but according to his perfect plan.”

In light of his diagnosis, he has come to view each day as a gift, aiming to live each moment intentionally.

“Jesus himself said tomorrow has enough trouble for its own,” Parke said. “So I thank God for each day, living moment by moment, which is how we all should live. I’ve lived a good life, and I’ve been blessed. God owes me nothing.”

His prayer is that God would be glorified through his life even as he experiences his trials. His hope is that others are inspired and comforted by his story, and he has already seen God answering these prayers.

Prior to his illness, Parke spent time outside the classroom on walks or working in the yard, also enjoying music and playing the piano.

He loves sports, especially college football, and his favorite team is the Ohio State Buckeyes. His favorite book is What’s So Amazing About Grace by Phillip Yancey, but he also enjoys Edgar Allen Poe and Earnest Hemingway. His favorite movies include Silence of the Lambs, Gettysburg, Alien, and Predator.

He has visited the Holy Land four times but would love to go again.

“[It’s] my favorite place to be if I’m not on my couch,” Parke said.

On March 27, 2025, Parke presented the MC Mortar Board Honor’s Society Lecture at 6 p.m. in Swor Auditorium in Nelson Hall. The lecture was highly attended. It was Parke’s second time to present the Last Lecture, his first time being in 2017.

A month later, on the morning of April 24, 2025, Parke was awarded both the SGA Award for outstanding faculty members and named the 2025 Distinguished Professor of the Year.

Parke sees it all as an opportunity glorify God. He strives to live by the words of John 3:30: “He must increase; I must decrease.”

“I need to get out of the way, and let God do what only God can," Parke said. “It's not about me, my will, my preference, my wants — no. My prayer has been, ‘God, use me. Glorify yourself through me. And now, I’ll, God, display your works on me, your canvas.’”

The phrase Choctaw family is used casually by many, but for Grey Thompson, Mississippi College and the Magnolia State have always felt like home. Thompson, a well-known and active student on campus, has ambitious goals for the future as he steps into his newest responsibility — the Student Government Association (SGA) presidency.

While Thompson spent his childhood and early teenage years moving around before settling in Columbus, Ohio, Mississippi is at the root of his family. His parents, Dr. Blake and Jana Thompson, graduated from the same Mississippi high school, then from Ole Miss.

In 2018, the Thompsons moved back to Mississippi as Dr. Thompson accepted a role in Mississippi College’s administration. It was during this time that Grey Thompson started learning skills and gaining experience that still drive him today. Thompson attended Jackson Preparatory Academy (Jackson Prep) throughout high school, where he pursued athletics as vigorously as academics. As a member of the school's football and track teams, Thompson developed the discipline and dedication that helped shape him into who he is today.

“They [sports] took up a lot of my time. A lot of great lessons about life and leadership came through sports. You know, I use a lot of sports analogies,” Grey Thompson said.

After graduating from high school, Thompson seamlessly transitioned into MC student life. The pre-law student found himself engaging in several campus clubs and organizations. In his first year, 2023, Thompson went through the MC recruitment process for clubs and tribes. There, he met other students, established himself as an active voice on campus, and ultimately rushed Rotaract Men’s Service Club. The following year, he was elected as an officer of Rotaract and led a large-scale recruiting effort that ranked among the best in the club’s history. In 2024, Thompson joined the Choctaw Ambassadors, a school-sanctioned student group responsible for hosting alumni and representing the university in a positive light. Most recently, in the spring of 2025, Thompson aided in the establishment of the MC College Republicans group as a charter member.

Other students were quick to recognize Thompson’s easy-going, extroverted personality and considered it to be one of his greatest strengths. “Grey is very extroverted,” Lawson Goodman, a sophomore accounting student, said. “He’s a super good guy who is going to go out there and talk to people. It doesn’t matter who you are — he’ll talk to you. He’ll hold a conversation. He’s really easy to talk to.” Goodman, one of Thompson’s roommates, considers him to be among his closest friends at MC.

Goodman also weighed in on what he perceived might be one of the incoming president's greatest challenges. He stated that while Thompson’s extroversion may help him engage in conversation, it may intimidate or discourage his peers from initiating interactions. “He’s extroverted, but if you don’t know him, it may be hard to approach him to talk about stuff,” Goodman said.

During the 2025 spring semester, Thompson officially set his sights on the presidency and began to make his agenda known. He served on the student affairs committee, where he gained more experience and insight into the planning and execution of student events at MC. Thompson also joined the SGA constitutional convention, a specialized committee tasked with rebuilding the structure of the SGA’s steering documents. In this committee, Thompson advocated for better clarity in policy implementation and argued for policies that would increase SGA authority and influence in the approval of student organizations.

“There are a lot of things that could be changed, and a lot of things we can do better on campus as far as student events and student outreach,” Thompson said. “Those are some of the areas I’m really passionate about. I think I saw that I could be an agent for change — the status quo doesn’t have to remain the status quo. We can kind of change that for the better.”

In further detail, Thompson expressed his desire to see SGA take on a bigger role in student organizations and aid in event planning.

“We have a lot of student organizations, and I'd like to see them do more public events. I'd also like to see SGA help foster these events and partner with many of these student organizations,” Thompson said. The president-elect also mentioned specific SGA efforts that align with his goals. “We’re doing a spring refresh [service project] week coming up, and I think we should definitely consider making that a yearly thing because I think it’s going to help our campus, giving back to our campus.”

Thompson’s stances are popular among the rest of the incoming SGA executive body. Vice President-Elect Jace Denson discussed their mutual desire to increase SGA involvement in organizational approval.

“That’s something we both want,” Denson said. “We don’t want things to be approved without thought. We want it to be legitimate, going through the whole process of being able to be approved.” Both Thompson and Denson expressed dissatisfaction with the current method of organizational charter confirmation. According to the two incoming executives, newly forming organizations currently submit their charter documents to the Student Senate for approval, and then are rarely heard from again. Both Thompson and Denson expressed their desire to hear from organization members in person during Senate confirmations.

Denson also commented on Thompson’s personality and their friendship. “He has a really good sense of humor, but he can also be serious when he needs to be. Since then [executive council elections], we’ve grown to respect each other and be even better friends,” Denson said. “We’ve had a lot of meetings—just about the future of SGA now that we’re both elected. So I’m really excited to see where that goes.”

Thompson hopes to leave a legacy of positive and lasting change. The SGA president-elect expressed his desire to use his position to help students of all backgrounds get more out of student life at Mississippi College.

“I can relate well with the student body. I know it is a very large, very diverse group of people,” Thompson said. “I’m out there to work for the people, you know, not to work for me.”

Thompson, along with the rest of the incoming executive body, will be officially sworn in on April 28.

Ziegler, who joined the university in 1994, confirmed the news with his signature humor. "That is one nasty rumor that you should believe," he joked. Ziegler has served in the Department of Communication for 31 years. He will be retiring from teaching at the end of this spring semester.

For the first thirteen years of his life, Ziegler grew up in the country of Bolivia. His parents were missionaries who worked with Ayoreo Indians, a largely uncontacted South American tribe. In eighth grade, however, his family relocated to the States.

Ziegler’s life is guided by the Word. “My favorite Bible verse is ‘thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might no sin against thee,’” he said. “If I know God’s word… and I’m very familiar with it, it’s not going to be a problem for me to apply it.”

Another integral part of Ziegler’s life is soccer. “I can never remember a time where I didn’t have a passion for soccer,” he said. “In South America, little boys grow up kicking a soccer ball.”

This passion led Ziegler to Cedarville University in Ohio. However, when a knee injury ended Ziegler’s dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, he decided to pursue missions, settling on a communication major with Bible and history minors. Upon graduation, Ziegler instead pursued his postgraduate education at Bowling Green State University, where he obtained his master’s and Ph.D. in communication.

Ziegler then taught at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia as a professor of communication for eleven years. While in Virginia, Billy Lytal, the chairman of the Department of Communication of Mississippi College offered Ziegler a teaching position, and he accepted. Ever since, he has been a full-time member of the department.

During his three decades in Mississippi, Ziegler has held a variety of positions in conjunction with his role as a professor of communication. In his first years at MC, he coached the soccer team. “They had a club team at the time,” Ziegler said. “And I thought, ‘Well, a club team can’t take up too much time.’” Even when the MC soccer club team developed into a varsity team, Ziegler continued working as a coach for its first seven years.

Ziegler also served as the faculty council president of MC, a debate coach, and the vice president, president, and executive director of the Mississippi Communication Association. “I’ve tried to do whatever came my way, whatever the Lord put in front of me,” he said.

With his 70th birthday approaching this summer, Ziegler shared that several factors led to his decision, including his wife’s retirement and a personal feeling that it was the right time to step back. However, Ziegler will continue part-time in the fall, exclusively teaching Communication Ethics while stepping away from committees and other responsibilities.

Fortenberry also confirmed his retirement following the end of the spring semester, but he noted that he will remain involved by teaching part-time as an adjunct in the fall. "I had planned to stay another year, but the university offered a buyout," Fortenberry shared. After carefully reviewing his options, he decided that retirement was the right choice.

Fortenberry joined the Department of Communication faculty in June of 1986. He has served in various roles, including Chair of the Department. The professor came from a family line of educators. Both of his parents and his paternal grandfather taught.

“I always thought it would be great to work in higher ed,” Fortenberry said. “I thought that it was a nice way to make a living. You got to impact young folks and make, hopefully, a positive impression in their life, so that when they make future decisions, they'll be able to look back to some of the lessons that they learned in the classroom. I think critical thinking and decision making are probably the best things that we can teach in college.”

Fortenberry never imagined he would teach at a four-year university. His highest goal was to be a professor at a junior college until former Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) President Dr. J. Larry Crain gave him the opportunity to teach at SLU. Crain knew Fortenberry was capable of teaching at a higher level and made an impact that lasted a life-time. The young professor would apply the same philosophy to the classroom.

“I'm trying to place high expectations and challenge students to meet those expectations,” Fortenberry said. “They don't really care for it that way, but I had so many students years later say to me, ‘Thank you. You made me work harder than I thought I could.’”

During his time at MC, Fortenberry has many achievements under his belt. Fortenberry, alongside former Department of Communication Chair Dr. Billy Lytal, pioneered the use of syllabi on campus. Additionally, he oversaw a boom in communication majors, and the department flourished to 150 students at one time. However, the accomplishments for which he is most proud are watching his children lead successful lives and his impact on students.

“I was able to get both my children to graduate,” Fortenberry said. “I watched them go on and become very successful… I've been able to influence literally several thousands of students and to mold their minds and their way of looking at things.”

With nearly 1,000 acres of family-owned land in South Mississippi, Fortenberry is eager to finally spend time outdoors, something he missed while serving as department chair and working 60-hour weeks. "I didn’t have much time to spend with my family or on the land because of my workload," he said. Now, he looks forward to reconnecting with both. He and his wife also plan to travel, noting he really wanted to experience the aspens turn golden in the Colorado Rockies.

Although Ziegler plans to exit quietly, he also has big plans for retirement. He and his wife intend to travel to destinations such as the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park. He is also looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren. “I’m gonna continue bike riding,” Ziegler said. “And I’ll probably do some coaching [for] youth soccer.”

The department will undoubtedly feel the absence of Ziegler and Fortenberry, but Ziegler believes the department is well-positioned. “I think that it’s going in a good direction,” Ziegler said. “I wouldn’t want it to change.”

Guided by the motto “to thrive joyfully as one community,” Chenoa members cultivate a close-knit and supportive environment. With its small size, the tribe offers a special opportunity to form long-lasting friendships with every member.

“I like to think of Chenoa as going into your grandmother’s home,” Kate Secoy, the public relations chair of Chenoa, said. “It’s very warm, very welcoming; it’s very familiar to you. It did not take me long at all to get acquainted with everyone.”

There is a strong network within Chenoa that has affected each of the members’ lives immensely. Secoy believes the consistently supportive community has played a pivotal role in building her self-confidence. “I wouldn’t be as confident as I am about myself if I didn’t have them,” Secoy said.

During the rush process, potential new members are required to memorize lists of the names of tribe alumni. As a new tribe, members have the unique opportunity to interact with the founding pioneers of Chenoa, gaining insight into the organization’s origins and traditions. “You actually got to meet them and experience what it was like for them firsthand when they were creating it,” Secoy said.

Chenoa’s status as a newer organization has influenced its culture in other ways as well. When competing in inter-organizational competitions such as Swerve and Follies, Chenoa members must work hard to gain recognition.

Even with its small size, though, Chenoa has experienced an exceptional amount of growth. This past year, the tribe has doubled in size with the new process class. This has resulted in significant structural changes concerning meetings and events. “With the new girls coming in, it’s kind of brought a whole new culture to Chenoa and we’ve had to learn how to adapt to that,” Secoy said. Secoy and other Chenoa officers look forward to an even bigger process class next year.

Within the next decade, Chenoa members hope to never stray from living according to their motto. “I’d like for new girls that come into MC to be drawn to Chenoa,” Secoy said. “Not for the look or the aesthetic of Chenoa, but because of the people in it.” For many girls, Chenoa has been a source of light in their lives, and Secoy hopes its tribe members will remain committed in their resolve to joyfully support one another. The Chenoa community is also appreciative of its beaux. “They are truly some of the best people I’ve ever met,” Secoy gushed. “They make Chenoa even better.”

During their weekly meeting, Chenoa members will take part in a small commemorative celebration, complete with hats, music, and cake. On the official date, a special event was held to honor a decade of growth and community. “Since Chenoa turned 10, we wanted to throw an epic kids birthday party,” Secoy said. The event was held on March 30 at Defy Trampoline Park.

“This gave us a chance to fully celebrate our decade milestone all together doing something we love,” Secoy said.

Annalyn Nevels, Kayden Lightkep and Gracie Guest aired their first episode of The PODcast on Jan. 21.

The girls' friendship began to form in the summer of 2022 when Nevels was searching for a roommate through the housing portal.

“I didn't [know] anyone that was coming here,” Nevels said. “I saw Kayden on the housing portal and saw that she was in the Whitt, and I was like, ‘I'm gonna save this girl. Nobody wants to live in the Whitt.’”

During that first week, the roommates met the third and final co-host of their future podcast, Gracie Guest. Guest lived on the same hall and joined Nevels and Lightkep for welcome week silent disco.

As the three recounted the memory, they laughed.

“We started dancing,” Nevels said. “It was honestly pretty awkward. Then, all of a sudden, we go looking for Gracie, and Gracie is gone.”

Despite the awkward event, there were no hard feelings, and the three found commonalities, resulting in a strong friendship.

“Both are just very good at giving advice and helping me spiritually,” Guest said.

“They're the two people I go to for advice,” Lightkep said.

Conversations of starting their own podcast began in the spring of 2024 after Lightkep received a microphone for Christmas. Due to their busy schedules, the friends pushed the conversation aside until this past Christmas break.

“Christmas break was when we probably had a real conversation, but the conversation wasn't until after I had already gotten on Canva and made [a graphic],” Lightkep said.

Sending the graphic in their group chat accelerated the conversations. When the three returned for the spring semester, they uploaded their first episode of “THE PODcast”.

The name for their show seemed like a no-brainer as the three friends live together in the University Place apartments, more commonly known as ‘the pods’, which also acts as their recording space. With a mic stuck between two Harry Potter books, the girls record whenever they can find the time. Topics vary from more light-hearted content such as the hosts’ shared quote book to more deep conversations like finding community.

“We started off wanting to do a more [light-hearted] podcast, but I feel like we've moved more towards a spiritual side because I think more people listen and enjoy that,” Lightkep said.

The purpose of the podcast revolves around mentorship and documenting experiences. Each of the three friends mentors younger girls and wanted to speak messages of encouragement to the younger generation.

“We want it to be fun, but also spiritual,” Lightkep said. “My thought process was I would love for younger girls to listen and would talk about topics to help them through maybe middle school, high school and then, like their first couple years at college. Even people our age would be able to relate to us and the things that we’re going through.”

Guest also wanted to capture her friendship with Lightkep and Nevels and the experiences they have undergone.

“For me, I want to have something to look back on in college,” Guest said. “What we learned. What we did. Our experience and things like that. Also, I think it'll be so cool [if I had] a little girl and could show her these podcasts.”

After two months, the PODcast has nine episodes under its belt, which exceeds the average episode count of podcasts. Data shows that in 2024 over 180,000 podcasts were launched; however, only 90% of podcasts that are launched make it past the third episode.

As summer looms ahead, the PODcasters have set plans to defend against being the next failed podcast.

“We're going to record a good number [before the summer],” Lightkep said. It'll be two or three for a month. When we come back in the fall, we'll all get together again and start it up more consistently.”

Listeners can tune in on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Currently, new episodes are uploaded every other Tuesday.

Benoit, a junior from Carthage, Miss., graduated from French Camp Academy. She developed a passion for running later in high school and only joined the track team as a sophomore, initially because it was a sport her friends on the basketball team participated in.

She was able to run just one meet before COVID canceled the season. However, when Benoit ran her first season as a junior, she fell in love with it. She did well from the start. She became a state champion in the 400, two-time state champion in the 800, a back-to-back state champion on the 4x800 relay team, and an 800 meter champion in the 2022 Meet of Champions. From there, she knew she wanted to pursue running at the collegiate level.

When looking at schools, Benoit knew she wanted a school that pushed her spiritually, academically, and athletically. Benoit stated she was looking for a team that felt like a family, and MC was everything she wanted it to be and more.

Freshman season was largely a transition season for Benoit as she progressed as an athlete. Benoit has matured a lot as an athlete since then. “Looking back at my freshman self to me currently, I’ve definitely matured in many ways,” Benoit said. “One major way is just how I view myself as an athlete. Running has its ups and downs, and you have to find a balance with how much pressure and value you put into it. It’s still a process that will not always be perfect, but I’ve definitely grown in the fact that my identity is not placed in my times, placements, or how successful I am. It’s in Christ, which allows this sport to be something that is fun, not a ‘job.’”

Benoit says her faith has allowed her to see running as a blessing. “It’s allowed me to have freedom in running freely,” Benoit said. “Running is a blessing that God has gifted me with, so I use it for His glory. It allows me to walk away from whatever time or whatever place I get knowing my identity is never in running, it’s in the Lord and I find joy in that!”

As a sophomore, Benoit helped the cross country season team advance to nationals before quickly taking over the indoor scene, placing well in the distance medley relay (DMR), 3k, and mile. Benoit holds second place in school history for the one mile with a time of 4.56.9. During this same season, Benoit, Lauren Wallace, and Jazmin Russell swept the GSC Women’s Indoor 800 for the first time in conference history. Benoit finished within the top ten in school history with a time of 2.14.71. She would later break that, making her new best 2:13.62.

However, it was the women’s distance medley relay that would make Benoit an All-American for the first time.

Benoit, in addition to teammates Wallace, Russell, and Hilary Udechukwu, was named an All-American for a season in which she earned as high as sixth in the country. In that same season, the squad broke the school record for the distance medley relay and, later, re-broke their own record. Benoit describes her best athletic memory to date as the DMR indoor nationals.

“We had worked so hard to qualify and ended up making it in the last spot,” Benoit said. “It was a huge blessing just to be there and we ended up becoming All-Americans on top of that. It was because we did it for one another. It was just something so surreal, and to do it with Jazmin, Hilary, and Lauren was something that I will always cherish!”

Wallace has been continually impressed with Benoit as both a runner and a teammate. “Taylor is a hard worker and an incredible teammate who embodies a Choctaw runner girl,” Wallace said. “She’s always thinking of others and thinking of how to be the best teammate she can be.”

“She believes in her ability and trusts in her teammates more than anyone I know,” Wallace continued. “She has this ability to put herself in a position to do something she’s never done and hang on for dear life. I’m lucky to be her training partner, and I learn something new every time I watch her race.”

As a junior, Benoit has won GSC Runner of the Week multiple times in both cross country and track. She won the 6k meet early on in the season, and she placed sixth individually in the cross country conference meet. While the team did not end up advancing to nationals, Benoit went individually and earned a placement of 87th in the NCAA DII national meet.

As she has transitioned back to indoor track, Benoit tried her hand in the mile before transitioning to the 3k at the end of the season. In Benoit's first 3k of the season, she broke the school record with a time of 9:49. Benoit described the experience as one of overwhelming joy.

“I never expected that to happen, but it was exactly what I needed,” Benoit said. “It was a breakthrough for me that I had been wanting for a while. I’m very thankful for Coach Webber believing in me and giving me that opportunity.”

Benoit medaled in all three of her events at this year’s indoor conference: the 3k, DMR, and 4x400. Benoit raced the DMR alongside Shana Sellers, Caroline Dooling, and Brookelyn Bidinger. The squad ran a time of 12:16.40 with Benoit once again breaking the 5 minute mark to secure second place.

“Taylor is a fierce, bold competitor that strives for excellence,” Dooling said. “Her resilience inspires her teammates to continue to persevere even in the midst of difficulties. Most importantly, Taylor is an incredible teammate and encourager. She cares deeply for others and ensures her teammates feel valued and supported. It is so inspiring to see her growth as an athlete and follower of Christ over the last few years.”

Benoit’s 4x400 squad placed third with a time of 3:59.31. She also placed third in the 3k 10:02.07. As Benoit transitions to track, she said she’s soaking up every moment. “I’ve recently realized that I have one more year of this, so I’m soaking up every bit of it,” Benoit said. “This team and this sport has blessed me so much, and I’m grateful for every opportunity that I get to do what I love with the people that I love!”

Bre Bell, a senior on the team, described Taylor as an incredible teammate and competitor. "Taylor is a relentless competitor driven to improve,” Bell said. “Her support for her teammates makes her an invaluable asset both on and off the track, inspiring everyone around her to push their limits and give their best.

Benoit opened up her outdoor season Saturday, March 1 at the Mississippi College Spring Classic. Her next meet will be March 22, 2025 at Belhaven University.

Its members participate for a wide range of reasons. Dancing is an effective form of exercise, and many members recognize the physical benefit of participation. “I’m always sore and tired at the end of it, but in the best way possible,” said Hannah Pierce, an active member of the Swing Dancing Club. “It’s so much fun, and also a great cardio workout.”

A highlight of participation in the club is the opportunity to learn new swing dance moves, such as lifts and spins. “I have an adrenaline rush, so [I love] being able to try some of the crazy, fun ones,” said Ella Flynn, another active member of the Swing Dancing Club.

Regardless of skill level, the Swing Dancing Club welcomes all students with the purpose of learning.

For many members, a favorite aspect of participation is the sense of community. The Swing Dancing Club provides the opportunity to connect with a wide range of students apart from classes or tribes. “This is a fun way to meet people outside of your major, outside of your day-to-day life,” Flynn said.

Because of the flexible participation requirements, there is always a steady flow of new faces. “There’s constantly new people coming in,” Flynn said. “Everyone from different parts of campus, just getting together to do one thing.”

The regular attendees are a tight-knit group who have bonded over their shared love of dance. “I’ve been doing it for a year and a half,” said Ella MacGregor, a member of the Swing Dancing Club’s leadership team. “The people I met that first year are the people that I’m still friends with today.” There are approximately 15 to 20 students who regularly attend.

The Swing Dancing Club is also excited to participate in Swerve this year, the annual dance competition between the various organizations of Mississippi College. “We’ve learned the majority of our dance,” MacGregor said. “So, I’m excited to see how it comes together.”

Along with Swerve, the Swing Dancing Club plans several dances throughout the semester, such as the Winter Ball and the upcoming Valentines’ Day Ball. Held in Anderson Hall, these events serve as fundraising events to raise money for Swerve costumes and other resources while also providing an opportunity for students to learn new styles of dance. “They teach ballroom [dancing]… we learned the Viennese Waltz,” MacGregor recalled. “And they teach different dips.”

“Everyone should absolutely give it a try because it’s awesome. It’s a really good way to meet people. And if you’re scared, just come give it a shot,” MacGregor encourages.

The Swing Dancing Club meets every Friday at 8.30 p.m. on the third floor of Alumni Hall. Ellie Acton serves as the president, and Jackson Polk serves as the vice president.

Martin began working at Mississippi College five and a half years ago, but she is no stranger to campus.

“I’m an alum,” Martin said. “I graduated in 2002, and my husband and I got married and just stayed here in Clinton, actually, and we also go to First Baptist, so MC is always on my radar.”

Her favorite part of her job is the people that she gets to work with. Not only does she get to work with the rest of the admissions staff, she also gets to interact with all areas of faculty and staff. Additionally, she is able to work with prospective students and families as they consider futures at MC, as well as students who currently attend the school.

“I really see this as a ministry, to get to have one-on-one conversations to help [students] navigate through this unique time of life,” Martin said.

Although Martin has numerous coworkers that have made a special impact on her, she is specifically grateful to her boss, Michael Wright. Under him, Martin says she has learned about leadership, hospitality, and customer service. Martin expresses a special gratitude towards Angie Hardin, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Operations, and Kaitlin Turcotte, Director of Recruitment. Above all, Martin says, they are friends.

She believes that MC lives out its title of “Christian University” and is grateful that she, uniquely, is able to work with a community of strong believers where Christ is centralized.

“It’s not just a title. It's how we do our jobs; it’s how we live our lives,” Martin said. “That’s pretty unique, I think, and pretty special.”

Unbeknownst to most, Martin’s degree is originally in music education, allowing her to have held both full time and part time positions upon graduating. She has taught voice lessons, and sometimes, she still does.

Outside of the admissions office, she enjoys watching a good television show – her favorites are The West Wing and Sherlock. She also loves to spend time with her husband and two children. Her bucket list includes traveling to areas of Europe that she has not yet had the chance to explore, such as Greece or Ireland.

Martin admires the spirit of community she feels at MC, and she reveals her love for the institution through her words and actions.

“I love my job, love MC, am proud of MC and the changes … [I am] just proud of how people have walked through it and handled it,” Martin said. “It’s a good place to be.”

Martin’s love for her job is evident through the joy she has each day as she brightens the days of those around her.

The International Students Association (ISA) seeks to build community by connecting students from around the world. This student run organization exists to introduce the different cultures to the broader student body. Involvement is welcomed and encouraged by all students regardless of nationality.

ISA member Miana Rademeyer, a freshman studying social work, came to MC from South Africa. In fall of 2024, Miana left her town of Jeffrey’s Bay to undertake her academic journey here in Clinton — 8,750 miles away from home. Rademeyer’s story is similar to the 159 other international students yet uniquely different from each one.

While the freshman’s involvement in the ISA stems from her own internationality, she also recognizes the need for community and stability among other foreign students. “We [ISA] have an aspect of trying to make sure that the international students are adjusting to campus life,” Rademeyer said.

In order to accomplish this goal, the ISA puts on several events and seeks to provide important resources. Each fall, the association hosts their annual Celebration of Culture event. Students from different countries are invited to set up tables with different foods, artifacts, and other culturally significant items. During the 2024 event, the ISA estimated 14 countries were represented. While this event speaks to the ISA’s goal of introducing global culture to MC students, another event helps secure crucial resources.

Each spring the organization hosts a talent show fundraiser. Proceeds of this show go to the Office of Global Education (OGE), the primary department for assisting international students. These funds assist with the establishment of scholarships, and the provision of resources, like transportation.

“We [Office of Global Education] are an international office that works with international students to help them come to the United States and find Mississippi College as their home,” said Rachel Dusenberry, an operations coordinator for the OGE/International Institute.

Sofie Elenkov, another student in the ISA, is a sophomore in the Biology Pre-med program. While Elenkov comes from a Bulgarian background, she was born and raised here in Mississippi.

“ISA is a group [for] students actually from different countries who come to study here, or students that maybe have a family background, like me, but were born in the United States, or even students that have no ties to other countries but they still want to see those [international] students succeed,” Elenkov said. “It can really be students from many backgrounds that work to address issues that arise from going to school far away from home.”

One of these issues that the ISA tries to address is transportation. The association is in the early stages of implementing a transportation assistance program that allows international students the opportunity to go to the grocery store. “The idea was to have a sign up sheet. We would have on Tuesdays, two shifts, where you can show up, we take you to Walmart and there would be somebody dropped off with you who can speak English really well and knows the area,” Rademeyer said. “The biggest thing right now is to get the word out about different events, transportation, and get people interested in joining the ISA and helping out.”

“If you see someone who you know to be an international student and it looks like they're struggling, help them out,” Elenkov suggested. “It can be a good thing to reach out.”

After the departure of former MCSON Dean, Dr. Kimberly Sharp, Dr. Lisa Eichelberger had taken on the role of interim dean for the 14 months before Harden was officially appointed. A retirement reception for Eichelberger is scheduled from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18 in the Cockroft Hall administrative offices.

Now, with Harden’s appointment in effect, the MC School of Nursing looks toward a strong new future under Harden’s leadership and experience.

“Dr. Harden’s academic and professional journey reflects a deep commitment to nursing education and practice.” Highfield highlighted.

Harden is a seasoned nurse practitioner and scholar with over four decades of experience. Currently, she is a certified family nurse practitioner as well as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Harden has 18 years of academic experience, including her recent tenure as the Dean of the College of Nursing at Union University, bringing both knowledge and passion into her new role.

“I heard about MC through a recruitment firm, and as I asked friends about it, I found that I knew several faculty who had taught here in the past, and some of the graduate students I worked with had earned their undergraduate nursing degrees here,” Harden explained. “ I asked colleagues and friends who live in Mississippi about MC, and they all had wonderful things to say.”

Harden felt drawn to MC’s warmth and dedicated spirit, and through prayer and reflection, she felt called to join the MC community and contribute to its growth. “I saw the commitment of everyone to the mission of the college,” Harden explained.

An exemplar of MC’s standard of academic excellence, the School of Nursing is widely recognized as a strong program. “[MCSON has a] rich tradition of excellence, and the faculty here are gifted in educating nurses,” Harden said, alluding to her knowledge of MC nursing students’ outstanding student outcomes and the program’s reputation among Mississippi healthcare institutions.

Harden envisions that the program would expand its reach in terms of enrollment and introduce new academic offerings. Harden aims to establish MCSON as a nationally recognized nursing program, especially distinct for integrating faith in learning. Harden’s efforts will focus on strengthening the academic curriculum to improve pass rates and postgraduate employment statuses.

“I believe that God has a plan for the MCSON, and we are listening to His voice as we move forward,” Harden said. “Again, increasing enrollment and growing programs are goals we aspire to.”

Harden recognizes the challenges that nursing students face. She reiterates that MC offers academic and emotional support to MC’s faculties, who are committed to ensuring student success. “The College has mental health services for students,” Harden commented. “Faculty in the SON meet with students to discuss their progression and create plans for success if they are struggling. Hebrews 10:24 is a great scripture for this – it encourages us to ‘stir up one another to love and good works.’”

For the new dean, both nursing and education are far more than professions – they are “callings.” Harden’s passion to shape the future of the nursing program at MC stems from her deep belief in education and service to God and others.

“I have loved my nursing career, and it gives me great joy to share that with students and to prepare them to serve as Christian nurses, meeting the needs of patients with the love of Christ,” Harden said.

To say Smith is an accomplished woman is an understatement. Smith’s career at Mississippi College began long before her current role. As a Clinton native, Smith attended Wesson High School and later transferred to Mississippi College from Copiah-Lincoln Community College to pursue a bachelor’s degree in religious education. After graduating, she continued her education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where she earned a master’s degree in religious education.

With her degree, she returned to the Clinton area, where she worked at various churches as youth director and children’s director. Eventually, though, the Lord led Smith and her family of five back to the Leland Speed Library, where she applied for the Library Circulation Associate position. “I loved the library because I was a student worker here, and I went to school here,” Smith said.

As the library associate, Smith brightens the day of every student with her smile and welcoming heart. Smith is an indispensable part of not only the Mississippi College community, but also the entire Clinton community.

“I’ll go out into the community and people will ask about Hope and if she is still here,” said Dr. Robert Burgess, the Assistant Library Director and Electronic Resources Librarian.

Even with her full-time job, Smith is tirelessly working to complete her doctorate online. “I’m working on my doctorate in educational ministries,” she said. “I’ve been working on that for three years, and I am at the dissertation part now.” Finishing this dissertation is no small feat, as Smith must hand write and edit over 300 pages before sending it in to her professors.

Throughout Smith’s life, she has followed the Lord’s will and trusted him in every step of life. “Do the best you can and follow God’s direction,” Smith said.

Smith is a prime example of hard work. Not only has she worked hard in helping numerous students along their academic journeys, but she has also worked hard in completing her own.

The Baptist Student Union is a ministry that offers Christian community and discipleship to students at Mississippi College. The ministry’s mission is to make disciples using student leaders and campus population as its driving force.

“[Our mission is] making disciples who make disciples,” said Mandy Phillips, the BSU director. “We focus on pouring in and investing in Christian students and developing them in discipleship so that they then can share the gospel and raise up other Christians who will do likewise and share God’s good news around the world.”

Through the BSU, students are offered with opportunities to participate in local ministry as well as international ministry. BSU holds community missions every Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., giving students the opportunity to serve their community and share the love of Christ. Additionally, the BSU provides opportunities for summer missions, giving students the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally with the BSU students from other campuses to spread the gospel.

“It is a very clear reminder of God’s faithfulness,” Phillips said. “I’ve been in collegiate ministry for 24 and a half years, and I have never seen a student who has felt called to go on a mission trip … not raise enough funds to go.”

The BSU also provides a community for Christians on campus, allowing them to connect with each other and enjoy fellowship with one another. The BSU offers a multitude of discipleship groups for students to get involved in. These allow students to grow in their faith as Christians and foster friendships that will point them to Christ. Discipleship groups range from one-on-one discipleship to co-ed Bible studies called family groups.

“There’s a lot that I love,” said Nathan Heard, the 2024-2025 BSU president. “The people and friendships that I’ve found here, they’ve been really impactful.”

Through the BSU, students are able to meet like-minded people that nurture them in their faith and become close friends. The BSU also brings opportunities for students to be leaders within the BSU and on campus, whether it be through being a member of the lead team or simply by being an example to others.

”It has been such a blessing to me,” Heard said. “We’re training people to be able to go proclaim the gospel in their workplaces one day … The whole point of it is to point people to Christ. That’s the biggest life change you can ever have.”

Both Phillips and Heard stress that the BSU is not a replacement for the local church, but rather a supplement.

“The local church comes first as being God’s bride,” said Phillips. “There’s just something about joining with other like-minded believers that can help and does help the Christians on this campus be encouraged and grow in their faith. Iron sharpens iron.”

Each Monday night at 6:30, BSU hosts a worship service called Vision. The services allow believers to gather together in worship and fellowship following the service.

Additionally, the BSU offers international outreach on Tuesday nights by hosting Ethnos. This program allows international students to find connection and feel welcome on campus.

The BSU house is also open Monday through Friday from 10:00-4:30, welcoming students to come by and study or spend time together. The BSU also hosts various events on campus throughout the semester.

“There are so many different ways to get involved,” Heard said. “I’d encourage anyone to come and check it out, whether that be on a Monday night, or if you feel more like you want to come to the house, come on.”

In addition to Mandy Phillips and Nathan Heard, Cody Counts serves as the assistant director, and Gracie Guest serves as the 2024-2025 vice president. The BSU hopes welcome people in, create community, and point others to Jesus.

Derrick Martin of Clinton is likely a familiar face to most students on Mississippi College’s campus. As a staff member of the cafeteria, he has greeted students with a smile for 34 years. Martin uses his position as an opportunity to inspire and lead others.

“[My siblings and I] were raised like that,” Martin said. “My parents always told me to be nice to people and be kind to people.”

Martin grew up here in Clinton, and he graduated from Clinton High School in 1991. Before he began working at MC, his first job was in a food truck. However, he was no stranger to the campus.

“We always came when we were kids,” Martin said. “We’d come up here to the football games and the basketball games.”

Over his time at MC, Martin has worked hard and has become a respected part of the MC staff. From washing dishes to cleaning tables, Martin has held a number of different jobs within the cafeteria and is one of their most relied-upon employees. In 2022, he was nominated for the MVP award by a student.

He has enjoyed working with Mississippi College, especially enjoying the fellowship that he has experienced as a part of staff. In fact, many of the staff he works with lived in his neighborhood growing up.

Martin’s love for his coworkers is evident. He says fellow staff member Steve Johnson has been a particular blessing to him, helping him with late nights washing dishes and cleaning up. “I thank God for Steve because he stuck with me,” Martin said. “I couldn’t find anyone else to do it. I thank him for sticking by me.”

Martin recalls the many people throughout his life and childhood who encouraged him. He wants to carry that legacy on. Martin asks students how they are doing with their classes and prays for them. He tries to be a mentor to others. One of his favorite parts about working at MC is being a leader to the faculty and students.

“That’s what life’s all about – being together,” Martin said.

Martin’s leadership extends past campus. He enjoys being a mentor for the kids in his neighborhood. He plays basketball and football with them in his freetime.

“A lot of kids don’t have leadership in their life,” he said. “We’ve got to be strong for them.”

All of the staff and students have impacted his life while working on campus. Whenever he is asked about retirement, Martin explains that he is not ready to stop being a leader. But, working at MC, Martin meets people from all over the world. He would love to travel one day, especially to Hawaii.

Seeing students go to MC to create a career motivates him to achieve more in his life. He takes pride in seeing students graduate, knowing that the past four years have been difficult. It is a blessing for him to pray with students and to talk to them.

“I just like being with the students because I know that college is more difficult than high school,” Martin said. “I pray for them because people pray for me.”

“I’ve been through trials and tribulations, but I thank God that I’ve come out of it and realized that my life is important to someone else too,” Martin said. “I keep going and keep striving and there’s someone watching me striving.”

Many kids in Martin’s neighborhood look up to him, as do many students on MC’s campus. Martin is grateful that God brought him to MC and has allowed him to use his platform to lead and inspire others.

Robbins, a junior international studies major, desired to strengthen her Spanish and to immerse herself in a new culture.

“I was just kind of hoping to have a lot of new experiences and to meet a lot of new people,” Robbins said. “It was just something so different from anything I had ever done and that was really appealing to me.”

For three months, Robbins lived in Salamanca, Spain, a city located approximately three hours from Madrid by bus. Though the international studies major attended classes just like her friends in Clinton, she experienced the new day-to-day rhythms of a local.

A local business woman, Yolanda, and her mother hosted Robbins, along with another MC student, Livi Cate Osborne, and a myriad of other students from around the world. In the mornings, the hostess cooked breakfast for her guests and sent them on their way to school. The students went to grammar and conversation classes in the morning for four hours before experiencing a daily practice of the Spaniards: the daily siesta. For two hours a day, the entire city shuts down to rest and to avoid the heat of the day, even during the cooler months.

“There's nothing really to do except go home and rest,” Robbins said. The midday siesta prompted Robbins to reflect on her own life and how hurried she can feel.

“They live life a little bit slower,” Robbins said. “That's something our host mom would always tell us. She'd be like, ‘Why are you back so quickly? What were you doing?’ and we're like, ‘oh, we went to get an ice cream.’ And she's like, ‘Yeah, why were you only gone for 20 minutes?’ I think that it made me more conscious of how fast I moved through my everyday life, and I would like to kind of slow it down a little.”

When the period of rest ended, Robbins and Osborne would explore the city, which they temporarily called home. Salamanca boasted many unique thrift stores, cozy coffee shops and sites to explore.

“We lived about 10 minutes from the [Salamanca] Cathedral, and so you could just walk down to the cathedral after dinner,” Robbins said. “It was beautiful at night.”

The adventure junky did not wish to waste any opportunity. Robbins and her roommate traveled to other countries throughout the semester. Robbins visited Florence, Italy, knocking off a bucket list item to see Michelangelo’s David. She also traveled to Portugal and Scotland for weekend trips, using all the available time to see the world while also building a resume of fascinating experiences.

“I think [studying abroad] is just good for your brain,” Robbins said. “It's good for your mind and for your worldview, because you get to learn so much about other people and maybe adjust your perspective on the world. You just absorb so much, so much knowledge and so many good, interesting things about the world. I think studying abroad can help any student to become much more well-rounded.”

Despite homesickness, missing the MC traditions, and minor discouragement in her studies, studying abroad in Salamanca was worth all of what Robbins sacrificed.

“I would say studying abroad, more than anything, I feel like, made me so much braver, because I was always in these situations that I could either do the thing that was super comfortable and boring, or I could go have fun and learn something new," Robbins said. “The more that you train yourself to take risks in a situation where you're going to learn something and you're going to have fun, the braver you're going to get as a person… I learned that hard situations are still part of the experience, and that it's okay if something bad happens.”
