Many Art Department cohorts moved into the Gore Arts Complex in mid-September, to enjoy the brand-new facilities for the second half of their fall semester. The u-shaped building boasts several classrooms that house painting, sculpting, papermaking, and drawing.

Maidie Jackson is an adjunct professor in the department and a part-time Complex front desk greeter. “I’m excited about what we’ll be able to offer our undergrad and graduate students. I’m so proud to work here,” she said. She is also finishing her thesis for a Master’s degree in the department. “My favorite corner of this place is the Quinn Art Library. It’s so quaint, like right out of a fairytale.”

The Quinn Art Library is where the department’s extensive collection of academic literature lives. A copy of nearly every graduate student’s thesis project has a place on the top of the nearly eight-foot shelf.
Students are hard at work learning Drawing I skills in one of Gore Art Complex’s new classrooms. The model before them helps art students learn the basics of sketching inanimate objects.
Found in the lobby of the Gore Arts Complex is the work of a recent graduate student, Michael Williams. His intricately detailed pieces are proof of ceramic pottery’s ability to tell stories through clay and paints.
The former junior high school’s auditorium remains. The renovated space will tentatively be used to welcome community members for local theater and music groups. It may also be used for future MC-related events, like musical theater productions and lecture halls.
Studio art majors enlist a pulp-making machines and papermaking presses to help create unique art prints and pages.

In addition to updated resources on MC’s up-and-coming East Campus, the much-anticipated ceramics studio and kiln court are set to be finished in January of 2023. Until then, the complex’s clean-line design and modern amenities have kept the faculty and student body busy with their work.
