Both the Mississippi College soccer teams won three of four home games this weekend.
The Lady Choctaws defeated Alabama-Huntsville 5-2 on Friday and beat West Alabama 3-0 on Sunday. The men’s team beat UAH 2-1 Friday and played to a 1-1 tie with UWA on Sunday.
In Friday’s match against UAH, Caroline Newman started the Lady Choctaws off with a first goal followed by a quick score from Beatrice Currie. Olivia Gelpie and Eduarda Siliva also scored goals in the first half. Currie was the only Lady Choctaw to score in the second half.
Emily Labus and Maialen Mera Torres scored for UAH. Even though the Lady Choctaws scored their last goal at the 63-minute mark, the Choctaws’ swift start gave them enough of a lead to ensure victory.
The men also picked up a conference victory Friday against UAH. The Choctaws gained an early yet short-lived lead when Guilherme Santos scored in the thirteenth minute. Five minutes later UAH’s Sander Van der Slujis converted a penalty kick leaving the teams tied at 1-1 for a tense sixty-one minutes. These minutes were filled with three yellow cards before UAH’s Andreas Tsimon was red-carded at the 61-minute mark. With UAH down a man, Noah Wagner scored his seventh goal of the season at the 79-minute mark securing the Choctaws another conference victory.
The Lady Choctaws’ Sunday game was a hot one with temperatures reaching 90 degrees. Facing West Alabama, the women’s team secured yet another conference win. All three goals were in the first half with Erin Hederman starting the scoring and Margherita Giubilato scoring the next two. The men faced similar conditions. The game was aggressive with nine yellow cards distributed among players from both teams. UWA held the lead for most of the game scoring with Kengeye Baronyi scoring at the 23-minute mark. The Choctaws tied the game 43 minutes later with a goal by Jorge Areces.
The women’s two wins give them an overall record of 7-2 and 4-1 in conference play. The men’s games lead them to an overall record of 6-2-1 and 3-2-1 in the conference. The Lady Choctaws were scheduled to travel to Georgia this upcoming weekend to face Valdosta State, however, that matchup has been moved to the following Tuesday, October 4 due to concerns related to Hurricane Ian. However, their Sunday, October 2 matchup against West Georgia remains on the schedule.
