Lighting of the Quad Enhanced by Lawn Improvements
The recently reseeded grass finished growing just in time for one of MC's biggest campus events.
Mississippi College held its annual Lighting of the Quad on Tuesday, November 28 to kick off the holiday season. MC President Dr. Blake Thompson kicked off the event, alongside new mascot Tushka and Thompson’s daughter, Cate.
Recent improvements were made to the grass on the quad in response to the recent drought and enhanced students’ campus experience this year.
“We had to make some alternative plans towards the end of the football season not to have the tailgate on the quad, so we can reseed the quad,” Thompson said. “Over the past two weeks, the rain came in and the sun came out. The grass came up and is absolutely gorgeous, so it’s ready just in time for Lighting of the Quad.”
The new lawn updates added to the yuletide atmosphere of the night.
“I’m glad it’s green instead of gray,” freshman Christian studies major Jackson Polk said. “It’s a little harder to tell at night, but definitely during the day it makes everything more vibrant.”
Students grew excited over the possibilities the new grass would bring.
“The grass looks absolutely beautiful compared to a few weeks ago at the last football game,” said sophomore music education major Donavan Harvey. “It’s very plushy. I hope we can watch a movie out here one night now. It would be great!”
Like Polk and Harvey, this was freshman nursing major Isabella Jenkins’ first Lighting of the Quad. Jenkins felt the grass made the event even more perfect. “It tops it all off, like the cherry on ice cream,” Jenkins said.
The decorations and lights will remain on the quad for the remainder of the semester.
