Mississippi College is ensuring top scholarships for students currently enrolled at Birmingham-Southern College.
Birmingham-Southern College recently announced that it would be closing its doors due to financial struggles, leaving its students to find a new home for their education. With this in mind, Mississippi College announced that it would grant transfers from Birmingham-Southern the Presidential Transfer Scholarship. This would mean that, if admitted, Birmingham-Southern students would be given $13,000 per year.
Director of Undergraduate Admissions Michael Wright said that the university wanted to make sure they were doing what was right for their sister college by granting Birmingham-Southern students the top transfer scholarship available.
“We have transfer scholarships that range from $8,000 to $13,000,” Wright said. “We made the decision because we want to care for their students the best we can. We are going to guarantee them the top of the scholarships we offer.”
Wright notes the similarities between the two universities and how this opportunity would ease the stress of these students’ circumstances.
“It makes for a really smooth transition, because we’re very similar institutions,” Wright said. “We’re small. We’re private. Our average class size is similar to BSC. It would not be a very drastic change at all.”
Senior accounting major Elijah Thompson from Hoover, Alabama is aware of the situation at Birmingham Southern and has mixed opinions about the Mississippi College administration’s decision.
“I think this is great for those having to leave the college,” Thompson said. “It may present a financial cost to Mississippi College that may or may not be necessary. I don’t know Mississippi College’s finances, but more people can come to campus. That is probably a good thing.”
