MC Student Releases First Original Single
“I remember the little hook line, ‘the way that you love me’ …and then from there, the rest of the song just kind of came through."
Coulter Clement, a junior marketing major at Mississippi College, released his first single, “Inexplainable,” on February 10. The song, which is available on all music streaming services, is based on John 21:25, which says, “If every one of them are written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have enough room for the books that would be written.”
“All those words could still never say what all He [Jesus] did,” Clement said. “If we try to put His love to words, we're still going to fall short and there's just no words to describe that.”
Clement has been involved in music since high school, and he knew songwriting was something he wanted to try. Some of his musical inspirations are Matthew West and Ben Rector. Besides being a vocalist, he plays the acoustic guitar and dabbles in the keys. He also plays in Worship Collective at MC and leads worship at his church.
Clement first began writing the song in 2020 and finished in approximately two weeks, but it was April 2022 before he started recording at Blue Sky Studios in Jackson. His songwriting process varies with each song that he writes. “There were a lot of bad ones [songs] to get to one that I was like, ‘okay, you know, good one,’” he joked. He usually starts with a hook and goes from there. “I remember the little hook line, ‘the way that you love me’ …and then from there, the rest of the song just kind of came through,” he said. After that, he adds the chorus, verses, and chords.
“I feel like Coulter’s new single truly displays his heart. The upbeat song is all about the goodness of Christ and how His love for us is inexplainable,” said recent MC alumna Emily Kate Ford. “Coulter lives this out in his everyday life, so him turning it into a song is really cool.”
