The Lovers Swings Undergo Renovation
As more damages occur, the swings central to campus undergo changes.
Mississippi College continues to undergo changes around campus in order to benefit present and future students, staff, and local Clintonians. Another change on the list of updates could be to the famous “Lover Swings.”
This well-known date spot is located just past the big MC letters on Pedestrian Street, surrounded by resident halls Mary Nelson, Hederman, and Gunter.
Before the resident hall New Women’s was built, the open space was a popular spot for students, who used the spot to either congregate or study because of its proximity to the cafeteria and other important event areas at MC. The area was also known for its view of another popular MC spot known as “The Bowl.”
At the time, there was only one swing, It eventually broke down and was eventually replaced with the four swings that students see today.
Since then, the “Lover Swings” have been known as a tranquil area with a beautiful tree in the middle of the four seats where students can sit and enjoy or do work.
The “Lover Swings” earned their name because many MC students claim to have fallen in love with their significant others while sitting in them. Students have mentioned that the swings are “like magic” because of the number of people who have married the person they typically sat with in these swings.
A string of accidents involving the swings have been reported to public safety. As a result, the swings will need time to get properly renovated for student and faculty safety. The physical plant has claimed that the roofs require repair, and one of the four swings has been broken since the fall. It is currently being repaired at the physical plant shop. There is no specific date for the roof renovations to take place or the fourth swing to come back to the scene.
As of now, there are no plans to remove the swings, but that may change depending on a possible increase in injuries, risks, and damages. The swings may have to be removed for the safety of the students and faculty and could even be replaced with another MC staple for students to congregate and study in once more.
