Women’s Basketball Gears Up for Second Half of Conference Play
The Choctaws are 5-6 in conference play with 11 games left in the regular season.
The Mississippi College women’s basketball team is 9-8 overall in the season. In conference, the team holds a record of 5-6, leaving them tied for sixth place with Valdosta State and Montevallo. They look to maintain a top conference spot in the 11 games left in the regular season.
Only eight teams will make the GSC tournament, and the Choctaws secured a spot in the current top eight with a big win over Auburn Montgomery, who has consequently been pushed to ninth with a record of 4-7. Senior Tiara Abron led the Choctaws that game with 25 points to help secure the victory in overtime, 77-73.
Abron’s fellow senior Amelia Bell believes this team is special because of the women comprising it. “This team has faced a lot of adversity, especially looking back at the past three seasons that I have been here, but I wouldn’t want to be playing my senior season with anyone else,” Bell said. “This program is very special, and it’s because of the people that are here.”
Abron leads the Choctaws in overall points averaging 12.4. Tytiana Buckley is close behind with 12.0, and Bell just shortly behind with 10.4 points. Abron, Alexis Rowe, and Buckley lead the team in steals. Bell leads the team in blocks. Abron, Buckley, and Nia Coleman lead the team in assists.
The team is averaging 14.3 free throws a game at a 73% accuracy rate. The Choctaws are also averaging nearly 37 rebounds per game as well as 9.5 steals.
Bell emphasized her pride in the team so far. “I am so proud of how competitive our team is and how we never give up in the games,” Bell said. “I think this is what sets us apart from a lot of the other teams in the conference.”
The team will hold seven of their remaining 11 conference games at home. With the team currently being 6-3 at home, this bodes well for the Choctaws.
Bell contributes a lot of the team’s success to her teammates and coaches. “Without them I would not be the player I am,” Bell said. “I also contribute a lot of it to our coaches. They constantly challenge me as a player and push me to be the best on and off the court that I can be.” Bell says her goal for the team is to win the GSC championship.
MC is set to play the current conference number one, Union University, on Thursday, January 23rd. If the team maintains their top eight conference ranking, the first round of the conference tournament will be March 4th.
