MC Celebrates Lunar New Year

At its annual event, the Office of Global Education brought Asian culture to Clinton.

Students and community members officially rang in the Year of the Snake in Alumni Hall on January 30 at the Office of Global Education’s Lunar New Year celebration.

Traditional Lunar New Year foods were served, including a buffet of Asian favorites and boba tea. There were also multiple activities, including calligraphy, making firecrackers and karaoke.

MC’s new Global Education Director Dr. Richard Ladner hopes this annual event will continue to bring students both international and domestic together.

“This is a great way for students to celebrate their own culture, but also MC students to be exposed to other cultures,” Ladner said. “Hopefully, they can get a little bit of an appetite for possibly studying abroad or getting a new experience, so they can appreciate cultures that are different from their own at Mississippi College.”

One of these students was Thanh Tran of Vietnam, who said that the event brought back childhood memories.

“Personally, it gives me a really warm feeling,” Tran said. “It means a lot to me.”

Cameron Young didn’t know what to expect when he entered the Alumni gym. He really enjoyed foods that he may not otherwise have tried.

“Trying new foods from other cultures really let me in on how they prepare their foods, their diet, and their cultures,” Young said. “So, it allowed me to have a small window into how they prepare their food in their everyday lives.”
