Students Give Back to Those in Need at Lighting of the Quad

Several charitable causes were represented this year at the annual holiday event.

Students and community members gathered for MC’s annual Lighting of the Quad Tuesday night. The twinkling lights and festive activities in front of Nelson Hall have become tradition for many on campus and in the Clinton Community.

Campus Programming Director Anna-Claire Young says that there are a number of new additions to the event this year that give back to those in need.

“Some new aspects of it is that we have Dr. Ambrose dressed as Buddy the Elf and that was a fundraiser for Dance Marathon,” Young said. “You can take your picture with him. There is also a station where you can write letters to a local nursing home that we have. There’s also a station where you can drop off toys for our toy drive.”

It was these new experiences along with old favorites that filled sophomore public relations major Ella MacGregor with Christmas spirit and excitement about the coming holiday.

“I am loving it!” MacGregor said. “It’s so nice. Dr. Ambrose dressed up as Buddy the Elf which is hilarious and perfect. I love the lights and taking pictures with friends. It’s great!”

The toy drive was set up by the clubs and tribes for the Community Center’s Angel Tree and students who donated received a certain amount of points depending on the item given.

MacGregor felt that the toy drive and the other efforts to serve the community made the night more special.

“It’s to the experience so much, because we’re adding joy and light to kids that need toys,” Mcgregor said. “I think that’s great. I love that!”

The event was originally scheduled for Nov. 19 but was rescheduled due to weather.
