What to Expect from the Trump Administration

MC Poli Sci weighs in.

President Donald Trump has been officially inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. With President Trump back in the White House comes new policies that could impact students on MC’s campus.

Student loan forgiveness is one issue that is top of mind for students. Throughout the Biden administration, President Joe Biden approved forgiveness of millions of dollars in student loans. Dr. Glenn Antizzo says that will not stay the same into the Trump administration.

“I think this is going to be the farthest thing from the mind of President Trump and his administration,” Antizzo said. “As far as student loan debt being written off, I think there’s going to be a harder line on that.”

Dr. Antizzo also says that Trump’s proposal to eliminate the Department of Education is another issue that would impact students, but believes that it might be easier said than done.

“The problem for the Trump administration, however, is that I think that they would have to take congressional action to get rid of those departments,” Antizzo said. “As a result, to be honest, I don’t think that there would be support in Congress for it.”

One of Dr. Antizzo’s students, senior Keiwon Rodgers, says that if the Department of Education is shut down, students can expect major changes to financial aid.

“I also believe, in terms of the loan situation, I can see FAFSA loans not really being in play and us moving towards a private loan system that he has talked about,” Rodgers said.

As for the economy, Rodgers says that students have cause to be optimistic, but the question is how long will it take for Trump to deliver on his promises.

“So many things have happened over the last four years that there may be a process when prices are going down slowly but surely,” Rodgers said. “It’s going to be something we have to keep our eye on.”
